Fishermen Find Giant Turtle

Fishermen in Jepara once again found a giant turtle, a species of Dermochelys coriacea, weighing two quintals, in the waters near Tanjung Jati B Power Plant, in Tubanan village, Jepara. In mid-July this year, an even bigger turtle weighing three quintals was found at the same location. These turtles are being cared for by a turtle breeder in Kendal.

Since last year, fishermen have been catching rare ocean species around the waters off Jepara. Last year, for instance, they caught an 8-meter long tiger shark, weighing one ton. The shark was found in a weak condition. It was then cared for by the Diponegoro University’s Fishery and Maritime Faculty’s Coast Development Agency Laboratory until the animal recovered. “We released the shark in the ocean,” said Ir Mujiyono from the Agency.
